Hu Zeqian is a Chinese artist living and working in Washington D.C, who works with acrylic and oil painting, digital painting and cyanotype. Seeking inspiration from museum collections, magazines, and vintage photographs, which he collects as references from the internet. He uniquely reproduces the digital images he finds and transforms them into white patterns. By using a simple brush technique, he layers them on canvas in such a way that his paintings visually exist somewhere between digital art and actual painting.

Zeqian hardly does any initial drawing on paper. All his sketches are done on the computer. In his creative process, selecting the appropriate images for recombination and colour matching takes up most of the time, and this process is also the process of refining the sketch. After completing the sketch, it is transferred and replicated onto the canvas using a brush. 

Zeqian’s patterns resembling plant silhouettes combine elements of Chinese Dunhuang cave murals, along with patterns from illuminated manuscripts of the mediaeval West, processed through the artist's mind, to create the final result. The artist deliberately blurs the inherent definitions of objects while highlighting the uniqueness of each piece. This allows viewers to directly perceive the background details through the cut-out patterns. The artist employs printmaking and collage techniques, making it hard to determine whether these works are abstract or representational.
