About the Exhibition

Hu Zeqian (b. 1994), a rising Chinese artist currently based in Washington D.C, The US. Draws inspiration from historical sceneries, museum collections, magazines, vintage photographs, and artifacts. Zeqian assembles recorded fragments and crafts new narratives with a meticulous layering technique, navigating between past and present, the fabricated and the genuine, and the personal and the universal. In his creative process, the artist reconstructs narratives by digitally manipulating his sketches, yet adheres to an incredibly slow and traditional execution process by manually layering with just a brush, without resorting to spray paint or digital interference. Executed with a masterful colour palette, the final presentation of each artwork exudes an almost digital quality with human precision. The deliberate paper-cut-like lines atop shapes and colours introduce a simple, direct, and impactful emotion-defining visual language, amalgamating all information on a layered flattened surface. The story behind each painting is the artist’s reinterpretation of reality through a contemporary lens, imbued with both nostalgia and hope.
